Dream Animals
Published in Hardcover by Chronicle Books (August, 1997)
Authors: James Hillman and Margot McLean
Average review score:

The ideas and dream-scape art in this book are intriquing.
This book is about animals that come to us in dreams. Hillman encourages us not to turn them into "dream symbols" because in so doing we lose the animal. Instead we should recognize it as real, as choosing to come to us from the great unconscious. He suggests that we honor the animal for being present by asking it why it appeared in the dream. "What is the animal offering you by coming into your life in the dream?" Through exploration of this idea, Hillman feels we can regain our kinship with animals. He offers the exciting idea that animals are trying to communicate with us in order to stop their exploitation and extinction. The ideas offered in this book are of interest to anyone who appreciates and respects life in this time when many species are driven to the brink of survival. The artwork is hauntingly beautiful.

Dream Working Handbook
Published in Hardcover by Carlton Books (28 October, 2002)
Authors: Abiye Cole and Helen McLean
Average review score:

Keep dreaming
Helen McLean and Abiye Cole have done an excellent job in providing an introduction to working with dreams in your personal life, or, as a facilitator, in professional life. The fact that they repeatedly point out that there are no hard and fast rules for interpreting dreams, and strongly warn against the indiscriminate use of dream dictionaries, makes clear that writing a handbook about dream catching can be tricky.

They have chosen to lavishly illustrate and illuminate their guidelines with examples from their experience in Gestalt dream-working. The result is a vivid book, in which the numerous step-by-step analyses of real dreams give the reader a thorough understanding of mechanisms in dreaming. At the same time the authors make clear that there are no hard and fast rules to be found which can lead to an automatic interpretation of a dream.

The book is very practical, with lot's of tips, varying from how to enhance one's capability to remember dreams to how to deal with uncomfortable images.

Dwarf & Unusual Conifers Coming of Age: A Guide to Mature Garden Conifers
Published in Paperback by Barton Bradley Crossroads Pub Co (June, 1997)
Author: Sandra McLean Cutler
Average review score:

One of the few really excellent books on conifers
This book is a rare work of art. The extensive and excellent photography shows plants in garden settings; photos are numerous and clearly defined. The cultural descriptions, including things like explanations, size, form, zone and suggestions for companion plantings are also very well written-complete and easy to understand. If you are a serious landscaper or love unusual conifers, this reference book is a MUST!

Father Struck It Rich
Published in Paperback by Cheshire Moon Publications, L.L.C. (December, 1996)
Author: Evalyn W. McLean
Average review score:

Incredible insight to the life of privilege and power
"Father Struck It Rich" was written in 1936, long before it became popular to write a "tell-all" about one's famous life. This autobiography by Evalyn Walsh McLean is a refreshingly honest story of a life shaped by wealth and power near the turn of the century. She was raised in the Colorado mountains by parents who instilled a sense of responsibility and kindness in their daughter. Her life changed when her father "struck it rich" in the Ouray mountains. After moving to Washington, she became part of the inner circle of the wealthy and powerful. She led a life of extravagance and eventually married Ned McLean, heir to the Washington Post. She is well known for having acquired the Hope Diamond. Of course, she suffered great tragedy in her life with the premature deaths of her beloved brother and son and the eventual loss of her great wealth. However, she does not attribute these misfortunes to the famous stone. She gives a frank account of living amongst the rich and powerful and entertaining kings and presidents. Unfortunately, her husband was spoiled by money (mostly her's) and influence and never rose to greatness, even as a husband. She later raised her three children without the trappings of great wealth and tried to give back to society using the principles taught to her by her parents. The one thing that she clings to is her father's idea that there is no true generosity in giving money if the giver has much money. Unless you give of yourself, it costs nothing and therefore means nothing. She teaches us that "money does not bring the big things in life-friends, health, respect-it is so apt to make one soft and selfish." Love of others and peace in your soul are ingredients to happiness. The book leaves the reader wanting to know even more about the end of her life and the lives of her children. Great reading!

Friendly Fish (Button Books)
Published in Hardcover by Book Company Intl (May, 2002)
Authors: Wendy McLean and Dee Texidor
Average review score:

surprisingly adorable
I saw this book in [local store] on the floor, and unfortunately the copy was scuffed up. The best place to buy board books is still amazon! Each page has one fewer bright plastic fish. The first page has five fish, the second four, and so on. The poems on each page are not baby words but they're catchy, and the book also easily lends itself to exploring without reading the words. I plan to use it both as a book to read and as a "where did the blue fish go?" game for each fish. I recommend it for babies and toddlers.

better than most travel guides
A great book for anyone with kids in Oregon. It will keep us busy for years. It has details about local city parks to large well-known attractions like Crater Lake. Plus there are extra tips on lodging and kid-friendly restaurants. We found a park with an old train engine in our own city I didn't even know was there.

Information Technology for Management First Edition with Two New Chapters
Published in Paperback by John Wiley & Sons (20 January, 1998)
Authors: Efraim Turban, James C. Wetherbe, and Ephraim R. McLean
Average review score:

An excellent TEXTBOOK with the more current approach.
It is a BRAVE book that runs against the grains when compared to the regular, run-of-the-mill management information systems book.

This is a TEXT BOOK, for students at the junior level in the US.

What I like about the book is it is brave in accepting TQM, Reengineering and Michael Porter's value chain model as a set of key to gain a strategic prowess.

When a stance is taken as to ACCEPT those, then we don't need to worry about proofs for that stance. Let's just believe them.

Next, those set of systems translate into strategies. Strategies must be quantified, right? When you quantify a strategy by computerizing it then you come face to face with computerized information systems.

Then you'll be asked about Data Communications, Internet (the media that makes those data communicate), the client/server, the data base, the whole bit.

Of course, the text is very kind to include the Economics consideration on the wake of establishing the systems, also included is the systems development aspect when we really want to create an information systems project.

This is an excellent book for those who need a survey on the huge and much threatening field of Management Information Systems - Computer Based.

The Listener's New Testament
Published in Audio CD by Fellowship for the Performing Arts (01 September, 2001)
Author: Max E. McLean
Average review score:

Great Voice!
I downloaded samples of Max McLeans readings and liked his voice and dynamics. This tape set is just like those. The dynamics are not too wide -- you can listen comfortably in your car without constantly turning up and down. Note that this is the New Internation Version (NIV). That was a definite plus, since that IS what I wanted. However, from the product documentation, it was not clear. I downloaded the audio sample and it read like the NIV, so I was pretty confident. When I got it, it was the NIV, so I was pleased. Even on the packaging, there is only a brief reference to which version it is. The only drawback I see is the packaging. It comes in a standard audiobook cardboard casing, which was to be expected. However, with 12 tapes, it can be hard to manage. I will have to get a secondary case. However, I prefer the cheaper cost (where they do not provide a case) so that I can pick out my own case (others may already have cases). All in all, I am very pleased.
